Context7
Pulls current, version-specific library docs and code examples into the agent's context so it stops guessing APIs from old training data.
Install
-
Claude Code (remote)
claude mcp add --scope user --header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" --transport http context7 https://mcp.context7.com/mcpFree API key from context7.com/dashboard. It works without one but with lower rate limits.
-
Claude Code (local)
claude mcp add --scope user context7 -- npx -y @upstash/context7-mcp --api-key YOUR_API_KEYUnpinned in the vendor docs. 4.1.1 was current when reviewed.
Context7 indexes documentation for thousands of libraries and serves it to the agent by
library and version. Say “use context7” in a prompt, or give a library ID like
/supabase/supabase, and the agent pulls the current API docs before it writes code.
When to use it
- Fast-moving frameworks (Next.js, Supabase, AI SDKs) where the model’s training data is behind.
- Pinning answers to a specific version (“Next.js 14 middleware”).
- Cutting down on made-up function names and options.
Before you install
- Setup has two modes: the MCP server, or
npx ctx7 setup, which installs a CLI + skill instead.ctx7 setupwrites into your agent’s config, so use--claude(or similar) to limit it to one agent. - Anyone can submit library docs. Treat what comes back as reference material, not as instructions.
