Alpha Vantage MCP server

Gives an agent Alpha Vantage's stock, ETF, forex, crypto, fundamentals, economic-indicator and technical-indicator data as MCP tools, hosted or run locally.

Install

  1. Claude apps

Listed in Claude's connector directory as "Alpha Vantage". Connect, then enter your API key on Alpha Vantage's OAuth page.

  2. Remote (OAuth)

    https://mcp.alphavantage.co/mcp

Recommended by the vendor. The older ?apikey= URL form is deprecated because it puts the key in the URL.

  3. Codex

codex mcp add alphavantage --url https://mcp.alphavantage.co/mcp
  4. Claude Code (local)

claude mcp add alphavantage -- uvx marketdata-mcp-server YOUR_API_KEY

Passes the key as a command-line argument, so it sits in plain text in your MCP config. Pin with marketdata-mcp-server==0.3.1 if you want a fixed version.

Alpha Vantage’s own MCP server. Each Alpha Vantage API function is exposed as a tool: quotes and daily/intraday time series, company overviews and financial statements, earnings, news sentiment, forex and crypto rates, US economic indicators (GDP, CPI, rates), and technical indicators such as SMA, RSI and MACD.

When to use it

  • You want quick price history, fundamentals or macro series without writing API code.
  • You’re building a screen or comparison and want the agent to fetch the inputs itself.

Before you install

Use the hosted OAuth connection where your client supports it, so the key isn’t stored in a config file. The free key is rate-limited; heavy use needs a paid plan. The same repo publishes marketdata-cli and an agent skill (global-stock-analysis) if you prefer a CLI to MCP.

Limits

Models make arithmetic and data errors, and free-tier data may be delayed or end-of-day. Check anything you act on against a second source. Not investment advice.
